Hash Generator: Create Checksums and Cryptographic Digests
A hash is a fixed-length “fingerprint” created from any input (text or a file). You can hash a single character, an entire document, or a large file — the output is always a predictable size (for example, SHA-256 always produces 256 bits, typically shown as a 64-character hex string).
Hashes are widely used for file integrity checks (verifying downloads), deduplication (detecting identical files), digital signatures (hash-then-sign), and security workflows like password storage (with extra steps like salting + slow hashing). A key property is the avalanche effect: changing even one bit of the input produces a completely different output.
This tool supports common algorithms like MD5, SHA-1, and the SHA-2 family (SHA-256 / SHA-384 / SHA-512). For modern security use cases, SHA-256 is a solid default. MD5 and SHA-1 are still useful as fast checksums, but they are not recommended for security-sensitive uses.
What is a hash?+
A hash is a fixed-length fingerprint of data. The same input always gives the same hash, and the original cannot be recovered from it.
Is MD5 secure?+
MD5 is fine for checksums but is broken for security use. Prefer SHA-256 or stronger.
Are my files uploaded anywhere?+
No. Hashing happens entirely in your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, so your data stays on your device.
