URL Encoder/Decoder

Encode URLs and decode percent-encoded strings for web development. Essential for handling special characters in URLs.

What is URL Encoding (Percent-Encoding)?

URL encoding (also called percent-encoding) converts characters that are not safe in a URL into a format that can be transmitted reliably. URLs have special meanings for characters like ?, &, #, =, and spaces — so when those characters are part of the actual data (for example, a search term or a file name), they must be encoded.

In percent-encoding, a character is converted to its UTF-8 bytes, and each byte is written as % followed by two hexadecimal digits. For example, a space becomes %20, and the letter é becomes %C3%A9 because UTF-8 encodes it as two bytes (C3 A9).

This matters most in query parameters (anything after ?) and when building URLs dynamically in JavaScript. Correct encoding prevents broken links, incorrect parameter parsing, and unexpected behavior when users type special characters.
